Manchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager from the 2016/17 season, the Premier League club said on Friday (May 27), signing a three-year contract with an option to
stay at the club until at least 2020.
The 53-year-old Portuguese replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaal whose two-year reign at Old Trafford ended on Monday, two days after United lifted the FA Cup.Announcing the appointment, Man Utd’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today,” he said on the club’s website. “He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.
“His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward.”
The self-styled “Special One”, Mr Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December, ending his second spell in charge of the London club. He has also managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid and has won 22 trophies since 2003.
Mr Mourinho said on the club’s website: “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game ... I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.” AGENCIES
